Philip Mudd is an internationally recognized and frequently quoted expert on terrorism and counterterrorism.  He joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1985 as an analyst specializing in South Asia and then the Middle East.  He began work in the CIA’s Counterterrorist Center in 1992 and then served on the National Intelligence Council as the Deputy National Intelligence Officer for the Near East and South Asia (1995-98).  After a tour as an executive assistant in the front office of the CIA’s analytic arm, he went on to manage Iraq analysis (1999-2001).

Mr. Mudd began a policy assignment at the White House in early 2001, where he was detailed from the CIA to serve as the Director of Gulf Affairs on the National Security Council staff.  He left shortly after the September 11 attacks for a short assignment in Afghanistan as the CIA member of a small diplomatic team that helped establish a new government for that country, then returned to the CIA in early 2002 to become second-in-charge of counterterrorism analysis in the Counterterrorist Center.  He was promoted to Deputy Director of the Center in 2003 and served there until 2005.

After the establishment of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Security Branch in 2005, FBI Director Robert Mueller appointed Mr. Mudd to serve as the branch’s first-ever deputy director.  He later became the FBI’s senior intelligence adviser.  He resigned from government service in 2010 and currently heads a company that specializes in security consulting.

During his assignments at the CIA and the FBI, Mr. Mudd frequently commented about terrorism in open and closed Congressional testimony, and he has been featured on ABC, BBC, CBS, CNN, Fox, MSNBC, NBC, al-Jazeera, and National Public Radio.  Mr. Mudd has also published in or been interviewed for the New York Times, Newsweek, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Foreign Policy, The Daily Beast, Sentinel, and the journal of the US Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center.
