Jill Dougherty is a Global Fellow at the Wilson Center’s Keenan Institute and a retired veteran Foreign Affairs Correspondent with CNN. She is a widely recognized expert on Russia and the former Soviet Union. She was living and working in Moscow in February of this year during the lead-up to the February 24th Russian invasion of Ukraine.
With CNN she served as Foreign Affairs Correspondent, based in Washington, D.C., where she reported on news developments from the State Department, provided analysis on international issues across multiple CNN platforms, and traveled widely with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Europe, Asia and the Middle East. She reported from more than 50 countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq and North Korea.
Dougherty also served as U.S. Affairs Editor for CNN International, where she covered political, cultural and business stories for CNN’s international network. Prior to that, Dougherty was managing editor of CNN International Asia Pacific, based at the network’s regional headquarters in Hong Kong.
In 1997, she was named CNN’s Moscow Bureau Chief and Correspondent and held that office for nearly a decade. She covered many significant news events in Russia and the former Soviet Union, including the presidencies of Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin, Russia’s post-Soviet economic transition, the Beslan school massacre, the conflict in Chechnya, the arrest and trial of Yukos Oil company founder Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Georgia’s Rose Revolution and Ukraine’s Orange Revolution.
From 1991 to 1996 she was CNN White House Correspondent, covering the presidencies of George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
Prior to CNN, Dougherty was a correspondent for WMAQ-TV in Chicago and a freelance writer for National Public Radio and Time magazine. She began her career as a broadcaster and writer for Voice of America, U.S.S.R. Division.
Dougherty received her B.A. degree in Slavic Languages and Literature from the University of Michigan, and her M.A. from Georgetown University, where she researched Russia’s soft power diplomacy.
