Speaker: Desmond Lachman

Overview:

Our speaker for March, Desmond Lachman, is a South African-born economist, finance officer, and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a public policy think tank in Washington DC. 

Mr. Lachman joined AEI after serving as a managing director and chief emerging market economic strategist at Salomon Smith Barney from 1996 to 2003. From 1980 to 1996, he served in several capacities at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). These included deputy director in the Policy Development and Review Department where he was active in staff formulation of IMF policies; Senior Advisor, European Department; and Division Chief, Western Hemisphere Department.

Mr. Lachman has written extensively on the global economic crisis, the U.S. housing market bust, the U.S. dollar, and the strains in the euro area. At AEI, Mr. Lachman is focused on the global macroeconomy, global currency issues, and the multilateral lending agencies.

In the academic world, Mr. Lachman has been an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins University. 

Mr. Lachman received his BA degree from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa and his PhD in economics at Cambridge University.
