Overview:
Dr. Stolberg is the U.S. Coordinator for the Department of Defense (DoD)/NATO Defense Education Enhancement Program (DEEP) helping to coordinate and orchestrate U.S. government assistance and support to NATO partner nation professional military education (PME) institutions on a global basis. He was Associate Professor of National Security Studies, Henry L. Stimson Chair of Military Studies, and Director of the National Security Policy Program (NSPP) from 2002 thru 2013 at the United States Army War College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Focus areas for research have been policy & strategy making, interagency/whole of government decision making, security cooperation, and European and Eurasian studies. The author of a number of publications, his book-length work, How Nation-States Craft their National Security Strategy Documents, was published in 2012.
Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Stolberg was a career Army officer and served on active duty for over 30 years as an infantry officer, intelligence officer, foreign area specialist (FAO) for both Eastern and Western Europe, War College professor, and as a designated Strategist. He was an infantry platoon leader, battalion intelligence officer (S-2), and chief of intelligence analysis for the 1st Armored Division in Germany; current intelligence analyst of Soviet/East European military forces for the Defense Intelligence Agency, Washington, DC during the 1980-82 Polish crisis; ground surveillance company commander in the 2d Infantry Division on the Korean DMZ; the Politico-Military Planner for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in the Strategy and Plans Directorate (J-5) of the Joint Staff in Washington, DC during the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall; and chief of intelligence (Division G-2) and battalion commander in the 3d Infantry Division in Germany, deploying soldiers to ongoing operations in Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Northern Iraq, and Rwanda.
Between March and June of 1995, during the time of the O’Grady shoot down and the UN Military Observers being taken hostage, Dr. Stolberg served in Sarajevo, Bosnia as the U.S. European Command’s (USEUCOM) Liaison Officer to the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR). Following a 2-year fellowship as both student and Army Research Director at the U.S. Naval War College, where he taught the “United Nations Peace Operations” course, in July 1997 he was assigned as Chief of the Europe/NATO Division, Plans and Policy Directorate (J-5), USEUCOM, Stuttgart, Germany. His five years in Stuttgart were highlighted by planning USEUCOM’s politico-military policy and strategy for Operations ALLIED FORCE (Kosovo 1999) and the European component of ENDURING FREEDOM (Global War on Terrorism). Prior to retiring from the military, Dr. Stolberg served as the Director of European Studies at the Army War College from 2002-2005.
Dr. Stolberg earned a BA in Political Science from St. John’s University, an MA in International Relations from the University of Southern California, an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, and a PhD in Political Science (International Relations) from Temple University. Dr. Stolberg is also a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College, Defense Intelligence College, and the Army’s three-year Russia/East Europe Foreign Area Officer Program.
Military awards and decorations included: Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (4 x), Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, and the Basic Parachutist Badge. He is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
He is married to the former Dianne Aldridge of Greenville, North Carolina, a retired infectious disease control specialist. They have two adult sons, Devin and Gregory, one beautiful granddaughter, Mia, and one Australian Sheperd, Zeus.
