Dear FPA Members,
“A recent meta-analysis of seventy-six separate studies concluded that there is an urgent need to identify lifestyle activities that reduce the functional decline and dementia associated with an aging population. Volunteering appears to be one such activity.” Successful Aging – A Neuroscientist Explores the Power and Potential of Our Lives”, Daniel J. Levitin
Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Foreign Policy Association of Central Pennsylvania. Our organization is run by volunteers and they are the life blood of the organization. Without volunteers, we would not be able to operate.
This new (March 2023) website page has been opened to give you information about the volunteer openings we have. You can find more information on these openings by clicking on the links below. An email will go to the appropriate person who will get back to you.
May 2023 EMBASSY TRIP OPENING
The embassy trip is an annual event in which we take bus loads of members and guests to Washington DC for a day trip to visit the embassy of a particular country. We start the day at the U.S. State Department for a presentation / meeting with people from the State Department desk that focuses on that country. We then have lunch at a restaurant that features the cuisine of that country. In the afternoon we visit the embassy, have a tour, and then a presentation by a diplomat. Because of COVID, we lost the last few years, but we are on track to start this again this May. Here are the positions and a brief description of the open ones. In the past we have had one individual or couple do this whole task. This year, we are creating a team so the tasks will be more manageable for each person.
The following positions have been filled: Embassy and State Department Contact (Dick Lee), Bus Coordinator (Dan Sim), Restaurant Coordinator (Tom Fosnacht), and Registration Coordinator (Stuart Snyder). Also, Carol Nechemias who has organized several embassy trips in the past is acting as an advisor to the group. We have one important position open:
Overall Coordinator – OPEN
- Coordinates the efforts of the team. While there are no specific tasks, this person coordinates the efforts of the team members to be sure nothing falls in the cracks.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE OPENINGS
Alan Stolberg is Chairman of the program committee. Each year in late May or early June, the Program Committee meets to come up with topics for each month of the coming FPA season (September – May). At the meeting, committee members volunteer to take responsibility for a topic / month.
Program Committee Member: OPENINGS
- This responsibility includes finding a speaker, hosting the speaker, and introducing the speaker at the monthly meeting. While finding a speaker may sound intimidating, we do it as a team effort, so you would have plenty of support from people who have been doing this for some time. This is one of the most interesting volunteer assignments the FPA has to offer.
